Emiliano Martinez and a potential move to Manchester United dominated the headlines for Aston Villa on deadline day.
The Villans were the surprise package on the last day of the summer transfer window as Harvey Elliott agreed to move to Villa Park alongside Jadon Sancho and Victor Lindelof.
Aston Villa were restricted in the business they could conduct due to lingering PSR concerns, but they managed to secure some top-level acquisitions, pending official confirmation.
However, United pursued a deal to sign Martinez, and at one stage, the transfer looked likely to happen – unfortunately for him, he remained at Villa Park beyond the deadline.
And now the dust has settled in the West Midlands after a hectic end to the transfer window, the Villa supporters are not one bit pleased with their goalkeeper.
Aston Villa fans are furious with Emi Martinez
As exclusively revealed by TBR Football, Man United deemed signing Martinez “too complicated” and thus withdrew from the deal to pursue the £18.6 million signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
Although Martinez would have been perfect for United, the 2022 World Cup winner has been left red-faced after Unai Emery excluded the goalkeeper from the matchday squad against Crystal Palace due to the ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
It has been suggested that Martinez’s move to United hinged on Andre Onana’s future, as the 29-year-old also failed to engineer a move before the deadline.
Nevertheless, the Villa faithful have long claimed their goalkeeper is the best in world football and are undoubtedly hurt that he reportedly chose to leave at the first opportunity.
One fan wrote: “I cannot get my head around the Emi Martinez situation now. He’s been disowned by the fans after last night and everything that has been revealed since. I cannot comprehend how the relationship can be repaired. Or is he just on the books, waiting for January? Crazy.”
“Don’t want him anywhere near the first team. He’s already given up on the idea of playing for us. Hence his woeful performances,” one fan claimed.
Another fan said, “Can we all spare a moment to laugh at Emi Martinez, who tried to engineer his way out of Villa and even said goodbye to the fans at the end of last season, and no one would take him, and now has to grovel his way back?”
Martinez seemingly has a mountain to climb to win back the Aston Villa supporters, “Stick him in the Under 23s he shouldn’t be anywhere near the first team, even if he apologises, he’s lost the players and manager’s respect.”
“Obviously – nobody wants him. Stick him in with the Under-18s until January and bin him off to Saudi or Qatar.”
It is clear that the Argentine has burnt all his bridges at Villa Park as the supporters send a clear message to Emery, “Long season with no football for the rat. No forgive and forget for him.”
Unai Emery faces a tough decision on Emi Martinez
Indeed, the overwhelming consensus is that the Villa supporters do not wish to see Martinez play for the club again.
Understandably, given the circumstances, emotions are running high, and no supporter wants to watch a player who no longer wishes to represent their team.
However, Marco Bizot was massively underwhelming in the 3-0 loss against Crystal Palace, and the 34-year-old is certainly not a long-term option for the Villans.
Therefore, Emery may have to make some uncomfortable decisions regarding Martinez moving forward, even if he risks further angering the supporters by selecting him as his starting goalkeeper until at least January.
