Report: Arsenal-linked coach to rival Arteta for ‘exceptional’ talent with club open to selling

Lazio could rival Arsenal for the transfer of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt this summer, according to Sky Italia.

Maurizio Sarri admires what Brandt can bring to the Serie A after replacing Simone Inzaghi at the Stadio Olimpico helm. Lazio now want to improve the Italian’s squad with defensive, midfield and attacking targets eyed.

Sarri appreciates Brandt as the German could occupy a deep, central or wide position in his midfield next season. But he is not the only player Lazio want in Rome, with Lucas Torreira also admired.

Lazio also face difficulties in their pursuit of Brandt with Dortmund likely to set an asking price above their range. The Bundesliga outfit have set a high but unspecified valuation on the 25-year-old they paid €25m (£21.5m) for in 2019.

Borussia Dortmund are having to sell players this summer to strengthen new boss Marco Rose’s first squad at the Westfalenstadion. Per Ruhr Nachrichten, this includes Brandt, who Arsenal have held an interest in since January.

Brandt has been somewhat of a disappointment during his time in North Rhine-Westphalia since leaving Bayer Leverkusen two years ago. The 35-cap German maestro has offered six goals and 10 assists in 64 Bundesliga games.

But eight of his assists came in Brandt’s debut Dortmund campaign, before starting just 17 of his appearances last season. Also, of the Bremen-born midfielder’s outings, only 14 – seven started – came in his preferred role.

TBR’s view: Arteta could revive Brandt at Arsenal

Brandt will likely want a new beginning next season, be it at Arsenal, Lazio or Dortmund under Rose. Especially after failing to establish a key role last term ultimately cost him a place in Joachim Low’s Germany squad for Euro 2020.

Brandt could regain a place in the Germany fold if Arteta revives his career at Arsenal, as he targets midfield reinforcements. But the competition from Lazio – and a manager the Gunners considered last month – could be troublesome.

Arteta would be signing a highly talented player in Brandt, despite his issues at Dortmund last season. Peter Bosz lauded the ‘exceptional’ gem while he was at Leverkusen and claimed, via Bundesliga.com, he had to get him the ball as much as possible, such was the impact he could have in tight triangles.
