Report: ‘Very intelligent’ Euro 2020 star has key concern over Arsenal transfer
Sassuolo and Italy midfielder Manuel Locatelli could snub a summer transfer to join Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, according to Tuttosport.
Arteta wants the shining star of the Euro 2020 group stage at the Emirates Stadium next season. But the feeling is not entirely mutual, with Locatelli eying a move to a Champions League side.
Locatelli is eager to test himself in UEFA’s top club competition and considers it a key aspect for any transfer. And he could get that chance at Juventus, with the Turin giant considering his involvement in a new-look engine room.
Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City are also keeping an eye on Locatelli this summer. Neither are yet to approach Sassuolo to strike a deal, which Juventus are mulling over to conclude business before Euro 2020 ends.
But the Old Lady would first need to part with players to sign Locatelli and are considering former Arsenal ace Aaron Ramsey. Juve could also offer Sassuolo Radu Dragusin, as the Romanian is highly rated at the Mapei Stadium.
The Mirror have also cited Arsenal as a potential destination for Locatelli this summer. But Arteta faces a £34million valuation for the 23-year-old, who has two goals in as many European Championship fixtures.
TBR’s view: Locatelli deals Arsenal transfer blow
Locatelli aspiring to play in the Champions League next season will deal Arteta and Arsenal a blow to their transfer hopes. The Gunners enter the summer having failed to qualify for any European competition for the first time in 26 years.
Arteta will likely now have to hope that Juventus or any other rival suitor is unable to meet Sassuolo’s valuation. And hope even more that Locatelli would consider moving to the Premier League to be a figure in Arsenal’s resurgence.
Locatelli would undoubtedly be an improvement for Arteta on his current options in the Arsenal engine room. The Italian has shown his box-to-box magnificence at Euro 2020 but was a maestro in midfield for Sassuolo last season, as well.
His performance against Switzerland on Wednesday night drew much acclaim, however. Dion Dublin lauded Locatelli as a ‘very intelligent’ player on Match of the Day for his positional and tactical awareness, movement and eye for goal.
