Arsenal are looking to reopen contract talks with Mohamed Elneny, with Football London reporting that they had initially held discussions towards the end of last season.

The Gunners need to make a decision on Elneny’s future this summer. As reported by Football London, his current terms expire next year.

It had appeared that Arsenal were working at various points throughout the last campaign to tie Elneny down to a fresh deal.

There were reports in late 2020 that Arsenal wanted to hand him a new contract. And his agent suggested later on in the season that there was work being done on reaching an agreement.

Indeed, Football London reports that talks started in April. However, they also hint that discussions had come to a halt at some stage since.

But the report adds that they are set to get back round the table before the new season.

Arsenal handing Elneny new contract may divide supporters

Elneny won a lot of plaudits at various stages last season. There were times when the Egyptian looked to be the perfect midfielder for certain situations for Mikel Arteta’s side.

And as a potential backup option, there are likely to be plenty of Arsenal fans who would back the club agreeing fresh terms.

However, he struggled to hold down a regular spot during a really disappointing campaign for the Gunners.

And if they are going to progress, then perhaps they need to look at better options than Elneny.

He turns 29 next month. By extending his deal by a couple of years, Arsenal are potentially signing up to have the former Basel man on their books well into his 30s.

Elneny – who earns £50,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is going to produce some colossal performances should he stay. Arteta labelled him ‘special’ after a win last season.

But whether he does it often enough is doubtful. So some may not be best pleased if he is indeed handed a new contract.
