Mohamed Elneny’s agent has told Egyptian outlet Yallakora (via Football London) that he is discussing a new contract with Arsenal, insisting that staying with the Gunners would be the midfielder’s first choice.

It has been a very interesting 12 months for Elneny. Few would have anticipated that he would be back in the fold this season after being loaned out last term.

But he has not looked back since an outrageous goal in pre-season. He has gone on to make 16 Premier League appearances, while he has featured nine times in the Europa League.

There is some uncertainty surrounding his future. The 28-year-old’s deal expires at the end of next season. And a look on social media would suggest that it is a divisive issue amongst the fans surrounding whether to hand him fresh terms.

But his representative, Alan Namzy has suggested talks are ongoing before claiming that there is interest from elsewhere.

“The player has a season left on his contract and we are currently working on renewing the contract. The player’s ambitions are to continue [with Arsenal], after earning the confidence of his coach Arteta. This is his first choice,” he said, as reported by Yallakora (via Football London).

“There are several offers [from elsewhere] for Mohamed. In the coming period, things will be decided, whether to accept one of these offers or continue to line up at Arsenal.”

TBR View: Elneny a solid backup, but new contract may not inspire supporters

Elneny looks to be the kind of player Mikel Arteta is loving having amongst his squad. And if he is content with the role of not being a regular starter, then perhaps a new contract could prove to be a good piece of business.

However, Elneny – who earns £50,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – turns 29 before the start of next season. So obviously, a new deal would tie him down into his early 30s.

He has proved this season that he is capable of colossal performances. But there are doubts about whether he is consistently impressive enough to warrant a new contract.
