Andy Robertson handed crucial Liverpool role amid Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah concerns

Something is going seriously wrong with Liverpool right now, but while Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk struggle, Andy Robertson could be the man to rescue the Reds’ season.

After a typically strong start to the campaign, Liverpool have now lost four Premier League games in a row, as well as losing in the Champions League to Galatasaray.

While it’s not quite crisis time for Liverpool, the Anfield outfit are losing ground in the title race already after defeat to Brentford at the weekend.

Even the normally so dependable Salah and club captain van Dijk have been criticised of late, with former Manchester United and Everton man Wayne Rooney offering a scathing report on the Liverpool duo.

Wayne Rooney slams Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk body language

Alan Shearer said van Dijk has been terrible of late, while Arne Slot has even questioned Salah’s form. Now, on the Wayne Rooney Show, the pair have been picked out as the main culprits of the Liverpool demise.

Rooney said: “No one has seen this coming. It’s hit them quick, it’s hit them hard and I think they’re struggling to find a way out of it. This is a time where the manager and the leaders in the team need to figure it out very quickly.

“Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, they’ve signed new deals but I don’t think they’ve really led that team this season. I think body language tells you a lot, and I think we’re seeing slightly different body language from the two of them. They are the top two players in that team and if their body language is not right, that affects everyone else.

“I might be wrong on this, but if I was a Liverpool fan or the manager, that would be a big concern for me.”

As two of the most experienced and talented players in the squad, naturally, when van Dijk or Salah struggle, the whole team is more likely to collapse. So, what can Arne Slot do to solve this issue?

Andy Robertson is the real natural leader in the Liverpool squad now

There are personnel and tactical changes Slot could make in order to mix things up at Liverpool and get the team going again. But, it’s worth remembering that the Reds still have one very experienced player who can get the dressing room motivated: Andy Robertson.

The Scottish full-back has slipped down the pecking order due to the arrival of Milos Kerkez, but there’s no doubt that Robertson still has a big role to play.

With Kerkez struggling for form, we could well see Robertson brought back into the fold more often, and his leadership qualities would revitalise this stuttering Liverpool side.

Right now, it’s all about getting Liverpool back to the impeccably high standards they set last year. If van Dijk and Salah aren’t going to do that, then Robertson will need to get this team by the scruff of the neck and drag them back to the required levels.
