Alan Smith has admitted to being baffled by a member of the Aston Villa squad because they’re performing differently for club and country this season.

Maintaining form is a challenging task for any footballer, and various members of the Aston Villa squad have struggled with it this season.

The start of the 2025-26 campaign has been tough for Unai Emery’s men, with few of his star players reaching the heights that fans expect.

However, Smith has seen enough from one individual to know that the club doesn’t have to worry due to their talent.

Alan Smith believes Morgan Rogers is a ‘very talented boy’ despite his Aston Villa struggles

Morgan Rogers was a player everyone talked about last season due to his brilliant performances, which caused consistent problems for Aston Villa’s opponents.

However, he has struggled throughout this campaign at club level, despite sparkling in an England shirt under Thomas Tuchel, and Smith has questioned why that is to CBS Sports Golazo.

“I think Tuchel will value him. He played ever so well in Serbia as well the other week, didn’t he?

“It’s a strange one when you’re not really performing for your club, and it can happen. Then you go to the international arena, and you just feel as if it’s a different situation.

“You’re playing with different players and your form can improve, or you know, alternatively, it could go the other way. But for Morgan Rogers, he’s a very talented boy without question.”

Rogers’ talent is undeniable, as he has shown countless times, but so far he has just two assists in 10 games for Aston Villa this season, without scoring a single goal.

Fortunately, the 23-year-old has reminded people of his qualities for England, which was clear when Rogers scored against Wales.

Aston Villa are determined to keep Morgan Rogers at the club

Despite Rogers not hitting his best form so far this season, Aston Villa is not worried about him in the long term; in fact, it’s quite the opposite.

TBR Football revealed that Aston Villa want to extend Rogers’ contract to make him one of the highest-paid players at the football club, showcasing their belief in him.

That might be necessary, too, as Aston Villa are aware of outside interest in the attacking midfielder, which could lead to them receiving offers in the transfer market.

TBR Football confirmed Chelsea are interested in Rogers, and Enzo Maresca’s side could explore this option to provide competition for Cole Palmer.
