3 goals in 3 games: ‘Wonderful’ Leeds United strike target has been brilliant in this season’s Champions League

Leeds United’s summer search for a forward was a long and arduous process.

Jesse Marsch’s side were linked with a host of players to strengthen their front line.

It looked like Bamba Dieng was set to join the club on deadline day, until a swift U-turn and failed medical.

In the final moments of the window, Leeds finally got their man, and Wilfried Gnonto joined the club.

Gnonto is already an Italian international despite being just 18 years old.

However, he’s yet to make his senior debut, although was finally included in the matchday squad against Aston Villa.

Leeds have struggled to find a player to make the centre-forward role their own.

Injuries to Rodrigo Moreno and Patrick Bamford have hampered Marsch’s options.

Leeds might now be looking at one player on their shortlist more closely, after a fantastic start in the Champions League.

Okafor on fire in the Champions League

Last month, Leeds were linked with Red Bull Salzburg striker Noah Okafor.

The 22-year-old Swiss international was linked with a move to Elland Road by Calciomercato.

Okafor has scored a goal in each of Salzburg’s three Champions League matches so far.

His latest goal came against Dinamo Zagreb, calmly slotting home a penalty.

Leeds could be up against AC Milan once again to secure his signature.

The two clubs have history after the Italian side won the race to sign Charles de Ketelaere in the summer.

However, Leeds also frustrated Milan by bringing in Luis Sinisterra, who they considered a potential replacement for Rafael Leao.

If Okafor’s brilliant form in the Champions League continues, Leeds might have a lot of competition to sign the striker.

He’s also in line to go to the World Cup, and if he has a good tournament, he’ll be on the radar of Europe’s top clubs.

It’s up to Leeds to move fast if they want the ‘wonderful’ Okafor, otherwise they might miss out on a target once again.
