'You're going to suffer': Clive Allen tells 'devastating' player to leave Tottenham in January

Clive Allen has urged Dele Alli to work hard and get back to his best, but feels the midfielder might have to leave Tottenham Hotspur to achieve that.

Alli’s fall from grace has been shocking, to say the least. He was among the best in the Premier League when Mauricio Pochettino was still at the helm, but since the Argentine’s departure, he has looked nothing like his previous self.

The Englishman’s value has dropped drastically over the last 18 months. Jose Mourinho didn’t really fancy him, neither did Nuno Espirito Santo. Now, Antonio Conte is giving him a chance, but it’s just not working out.

Allen, who played over 100 games for Tottenham in the ’80s, believes that Alli may just have to leave Tottenham for his own good.

Clive Allen: There’s no real desire from Dele Alli at Tottenham

The now 60-year-old told TalkSport: “What we’re seeing is a shadow of the Dele Alli we know, a shadow of the player that can make runs from midfield, score goals, link up with Harry Kane and be devastating.

“I feel for him. It’s the most difficult time in his career. There doesn’t seem to be a real desire. I don’t know how hard on the training ground. Unless you do the basics right, you’re going to suffer.

“His ability will come through but that hard work needs to be put in. Dele Alli needs to go right back to basics and rebuild his career. He’s so talented but it might be that he has to leave Spurs now.”

Should Alli leave Spurs in January?

Since the start of last season, Alli has scored four goals in 43 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions. That is a shocking return for an attacking midfielder who once showed so much potential.

Every Spurs fan really thought at one point that Alli was destined for greatness in North London. He was simply unbelievable at times, but the way his level has dropped over the last 18 months is a real shame.

It doesn’t look like things will work out for Alli at Tottenham. The best thing for all parties now would be to part ways in January, but there’s no way Daniel Levy will get the big money that he was once dreaming of for the 25-year-old.
