‘You lose his craft’: Some Leeds fans disagree with Bielsa decision against Ajax

Leeds United suffered defeat last night against Dutch giants Ajax – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter can’t understand Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to play Luke Ayling in the heart of defence.

The Whites were heavily beaten 4-0 on Wednesday evening by a strong opposition. Davy Klaassen, Perr Schuurs, Ryan Gravenberch and Danilo were all on the scoresheet for the Eredivisie champions.

It’s certainly not a time to panic over a pre-season scoreline, but the new league campaign is imminent.

The Yorkshire club kickstart with a mouthwatering away fixture against Manchester United on 14 August, so they know a big test lies ahead against last season’s runners-up.

Luke Ayling gives Leeds so much out wide

A selection of Leeds supporters on social media believe the decision of manager Bielsa to start Ayling at centre-back against Ajax was an odd one.

It’s not the first time the 29-year-old has played at centre-half, but plenty of fans claimed yesterday he didn’t suit the role.

He reverted in the second half to his more accustomed right-back role, which is where he was superb for so much of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

Bielsa loves players with versatility to plug many holes. However, some Whites fans want to see Ayling stick to the full-back area.

It’s a fair point that he gives them a real presence running up and down the wings with his energy.
