Graham Roberts raves about ‘fantastic’ 26-year-old Tottenham star after pre-season display
Graham Roberts praised Tottenham goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini after his pre-season display on Wednesday night.
The 26-year-old made his Spurs debut last night during a friendly match at Stamford Bridge against London rivals Chelsea.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side came from behind to record a 2-2 draw, which turned out to be a decent result in front of a Chelsea crowd.
Hakim Ziyech’s brace put the hosts ahead. However, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn both found the back of the net in the second half.
For Spurs fans, they got a first look at summer signing Gollini.
The Italian goalkeeper may have conceded twice, but can’t receive too much blame due to the quality of Ziyech’s strikes.
He did though make a couple of eye-catching saves to show why he’s got a reputation of a great shot stopper. For example, he made a superb low save to deny a Tino Anjorin effort midway through the second half.
Ex-Spurs player Roberts showered Gollini with praise on Twitter:
“Pierluigi Gollini you looked excellent this evening. Fantastic positioning and great distribution. Well done,” he posted.
Can Pierluigi Gollini become Tottenham number one this season?
Firstly, Gollini will have known the size of the challenge he was taking on by moving to Spurs this summer. He’s competing with club captain and French World Cup winner Hugo Lloris for the number one position.
It will be a surprise if Lloris doesn’t start the campaign as the first-choice goalkeeper. However, Gollini looks primed to become the 34-year-old’s natural successor.
He kept 13 clean sheets in 32 games last season as Atalanta’s goalkeeper, so he won’t want to spend an entire campaign on the Spurs bench.
Fortunately, Nuno’s squad is going to be tested by a busy fixture list that includes the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League competition
