As pre-season friendlies go, Wednesday night’s victory against Bayer Leverkusen could not have gone much better.
Just over one week away from their opening game against Wolves, Arsenal put on a show in north London against the Bundesliga champions.
Mikel Arteta‘s side sealed the 4-1 victory after an impressive first 45 minutes which saw Arsenal three goals ahead at the break.
It has to be remembered this is a Leverkusen side who went unbeaten in the Bundesliga last season.
And, it is fair to say, Xabi Alonso has been left stunned by something he has noticed about the Arsenal manager which could help win them the league.

What Xabi Alonso has noticed about Mikel Arteta at Arsenal
Arsenal are going into the new season knowing there is not a lot between them and Manchester City ay the top of the table.
Just two points separated the Gunners and Pep Guardiola’s side which could certainly be overturned this summer with some quality additions.
Arsenal have only been able to bring in one player with Riccardo Calafiori so far and he was not on display on Wednesday night.
But there is one thing which Arsenal do have in their manager which has really impressed the Bundesliga-winning boss.
Speaking after the game in north London – which his side were demolished – Alonso admitted Arteta’s competitiveness is so impressive.
“He’s competitive. He’s an animal. He’s developed a great project. As a young kid you could see he only wanted to win,” said the Leverkusen boss when asked what Arteta has that could help Arsenal win the league.
This is big praise from a manager whose side has just gone unbeaten last season.
Arsenal have what it takes to win the Premier League
The Gunners know the margins are fine between themselves and City at the top of the table.
One game was enough to decide the title last season with it going right down to the final day of the season.
If Arsenal are able to replicate what they did in the 2023/24 term, they know they will be in with a great chance of winning the league.
One of their main issues last season was a lack of goals coming from their strikers with Gabriel Jesus only offering four goals in the league.
Arteta’s side have what it takes and their hopes could be boosted as Arsenal look to sign Mikel Merino this summer.
