'Would've been incredible': Pundit says Liverpool should've signed £166m star right after City announced Haaland
TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent says it would have been incredible if Liverpool had gone and signed Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain right after Manchester City completed a deal to bring in Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.
City and Liverpool are undoubtedly the two best teams in the Premier League. They may even be the two best sides in world football at the moment, and they will battle it out for everything again next season.
Pep Guardiola’s side pipped the Reds to the Premier League title by one point in the recently-concluded campaign. City signing Haaland, who is among the best in the world at the moment, may just have increased the gap between the two sides by a bit.
Liverpool may have some catching up to do. and Bent believes they could’ve done it in style had they signed one world-class player right after the Norwegian completed his move to the Etihad.
Darren Bent: Liverpool should’ve signed Mbappe after City signed Haaland
Speaking about Mbappe’s new PSG contract on talkSPORT this week, Bent said, as quoted by HITC: “You will never hear me criticise a player for getting as much as he can, fair enough.
“But, I don’t like the whole power thing. I can’t get my head around that. Him making decisions on signings. Managers. I don’t think that’s good for the game.
“I would have also have loved to have seen him in the Premier League at Liverpool. Could you imagine Haaland walks through the door at Manchester City? And then Mbappe walks through the door at Liverpool? I think it would have been incredible.
“He’s still young, so I still expect him to go to one of the top, top European leagues.”
TBR View:
That really would’ve been incredible.
The summer transfer window hasn’t even begun yet, but Haaland is already the favourite to be the best signing of next season. If Liverpool had gotten Mbappe in, things may have been a bit different.
The two young superstars may not reach the level that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo did in their prime, but it really does look like they’ll be the two best players in the world over the next decade or so.
Mbappe, the £166 million signing from Monaco in 2017 (Sky Sports), has signed a new lucrative contract at PSG, which is a shame for Liverpool, but don’t rule out a move to Anfield in 2025, especially if the Reds remain as incredible as they are now.
