Wolfsburg fans react as Lukas Nmecha moves to Leeds United, one thing is abundantly obvious

Leeds United have just announced their first signing of the summer transfer window as Lukas Nmecha arrives from VfL Wolfsburg.

The Germany international decided not to sign a new contract with the Bundesliga outfit – who he joined in an £11m move from Manchester City in July 2021 – after scoring 19 goals in 85 appearances for the German side.

Nmecha boasts UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League experience – making five appearances in each competition for VfL Wolfsburg – so he represents something of a coup for Leeds United on a free transfer.

After VfL Wolfsburg announced the news on Instagram, fans of the German club flocked to react, and their responses are quite telling.

Reaction of VfL Wolfsburg fans suggests Leeds United have signed a gem

The 26-year-old is clearly a popular man at the Volkswagen Arena, as several supporters are gutted to see him depart.

After Nmecha sent a heartfelt message to fans, many flocked to wish him well instead of directing any hate in his direction.

One VfL Wolfsburg supporter wrote: “Thank you for everything, and we love you forever. Thank you also for your dedication, energy, and cheerful nature. See you soon.”

A second fan echoed that sentiment, and even begged Nmecha – who spent time with Anderlecht – to “come back” despite the fact he has only just departed, posting: “Wishing you nothing but the best! Thank you for your service! Please come back.”

Furthermore, another added: “Thanks for everything and good luck at Leeds. You are always welcome in Wolfsburg.”

A fourth wrote: “Thanks for everything Lukas! With your awesome goal in the 2-1 win in the Champions League against Salzburg, you left a memory in my head that I will not forget soon. I hope you score many goals in England and stay healthy bro.”

Leeds United fans should know the context behind this “stay healthy” message – Nmecha worryingly missed 77 games across five seasons due to injuries in Germany, with knee problems troubling him the most, so Daniel Farke must take good care of his fellow countryman.

A fifth VfL Wolfsburg fan built on that message, saying: “All the best for your future, hopefully free of serious injuries!”

Last but not least, another supporter sent a more aggressive message towards Nmecha, but still ended it by wishing him well, which speaks volumes. They posted: “Injured a lot, collected a lot of money, now that he is fit and has no contract left, he shows his gratitude (by leaving).

“Now he could have shown what he really has and given a little something back, but okay, in England you make good money too. Of course, the league is also mega attractive and exciting, you can already understand that, but I would have liked to have seen him at our place. Good luck in England and especially stay injury free.”

Vincent Kompany told Lukas Nmecha he “can make it” to the top

Nmecha came through the City Football Academy at Manchester City, where he was able to test his talents against some of the best defenders in Europe during training, including Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian even backed the German to become a superstar, with the Leeds United new boy previously revealing: “Kompany roughs me up in training but he’s really given me a lot of confidence, because he’s played against the best strikers in the world and he’s telling me I can make it.”

With the backing of a legend in Kompany, and having also received plenty of lovely messages from VfL Wolfsburg fans, it would appear Leeds United – who also want Emiliano Buendia – have secured a real coup.
