Manchester United aren’t the force they once were.
Under Alex Ferguson, United were almost unbeatable at times, winning trophy after trophy throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
These days, United aren’t as good. They sit 13th in the Premier League right now, and they haven’t won a league title in over a decade.
Speaking on Filthy Fellas, Kieran Richardson has been discussing the state of the United squad right now, and he made an interesting claim.
Richardson was a squad player under Alex Ferguson, but he reckons he’d start in the United team right now ahead of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho if he was in his prime.
Rashford has been in poor form this season, and Richardson clearly hasn’t been impressed.

Kieran Richardson would start over Marcus Rashford
Richardson shared his verdict on this current United team and if he’d get into the XI if he was playing.
Richardson believes that he would start over Rashford or Garnacho, claiming that his United team was on a completely different level to the current side.
“Like, what I’m saying is now, if I was at United now as a 20 year old, who’s in front of me in the left wing? Is it Dalot?” Kieran Richardson asked.
“Left back or left wing. Who’s there now?”
“Rashford, Garnacho,” The host said.
“Rashford and Garnacho. They’re good players, but they’re the players I looked at and think, nah, these can’t, I’m going to be better than them. But back then I had the best left winger in the world.
“I had Ryan Giggs in front of me. Do you know what I mean? It’s a different ball game.
“Who from the current team gets even in the 16?” Richardson was asked.
“I don’t think any of them get in there. In the 16 on the bench?” Richardson said.
“Maybe Bruno. Maybe Rashford when he’s on it.”
Kieran Richardson compared to Marcus Rashford
Richardson reckons he would start over Rashford, but when you look at the stats, that argument starts to fall down.
| Kieran Richardson Premier League stats | Marcus Rashford Premier League stats | |
| Games | 265 | 283 |
| Goals | 24 | 84 |
| Best goalscoring season | 4 | 17 |
| England caps | 8 | 60 |
| England goals | 2 | 17 |
| Player of the Month awards | 0 | 4 |
With all due respect to Richardson, he’s slightly over-egging his own ability here.
Yes, Richardson was kept out of the United and England teams by some quality players, but he never hit the individual heights that Rashford has.
There’s a reason Richardson was sold to Sunderland for £6m in 2007. He wasn’t a player United needed at that time.
Would a prime Richardson have a role to play in this United team? Definitely, he’d be a great backup option, or he’d even slot in to start at left-back with Luke Shaw’s injury problems, but it’s hard to say that he was ever as good as Marcus Rashford.
Amad Diallo says Rashford is the best player he’s ever played with, and when he’s playing with confidence, he’s certainly one of the top attackers in the Premier League.
