Wilson hails 'man of the match' Wood in Newcastle win over Wolves
Callum Wilson has hailed fellow Newcastle striker Chris Wood as the Magpies’ man of the match against Wolves.
Wood won and scored the penalty which sealed the 1-0 victory over Bruno Lage’s men, which has effectively sealed safety.
On the BBC’s Footballers’ Football Podcast, Wilson said that Wood impressed him and he could see increased confidence in him.
“Woody was man of the match the other night. It was a great performance,” said Wilson.
“The disallowed goal gave him confidence. You know what it’s like, you hit the back of the net and you have that run, he had that moment of celebration before it got disallowed. It takes your game to a different level.
“He won the penalty and rightly took it himself. I was wondering who would step up and take it, and he put it in the back of the net.”
Toon legend Alan Shearer actually said that Wood’s teammate Bruno Guimaraes was the man of the match on Friday night.
It is good for the whole club and Eddie Howe that he has two players playing so well that they could both have been man of the match.
It is doubly good that they are both two of his January signings, who are now more settled and starting to show their quality. That is important going into Howe’s first summer in charge.
