William Saliba may welcome Arsenal appointing Christophe Galtier
Reports over the weekend claimed that Christophe Galtier was one of the names Arsenal were considering amid doubts over the future of Mikel Arteta at the Emirates.
It comes with the Gunners getting off to a poor start to the season. They have taken one win from their opening four games.
Arsenal signed a lot of promising players this summer. But admittedly, they were not signed to be the finished articles just yet.
Nevertheless, Arteta has a major point to prove. It seems many have lost faith that he is the right man to take the club forward.
And perhaps those behind the scenes now have their concerns also. According to Ian McGarry on The Transfer Window Podcast, the Gunners would consider Galtier if Arteta is sacked. Brendan Rodgers is also a target.
Galtier stock high after Lille title win
The 55-year-old left Lille in the summer after guiding the club to their stunning Ligue 1 title win last season.
He has taken charge of over 500 games with Saint-Etienne, Lille and now Nice. In that time, he has won 229 games in all competitions.
Popular choice with William Saliba after summer links with Arsenal defender?
One player who has had a bizarre spell with Arsenal is William Saliba. He joined in 2019 for £27 million.
However, more than two years on, he is still awaiting the chance to make his debut for the Gunners.
Instead, he has spent the large majority of his time on their books back in France on loan.
Currently, he plays for Marseille. But it seems that he could have easily joined a Ligue 1 rival: Galtier’s Nice.
Saliba confirmed after moving to Stade Velodrome he had chosen Marseille over Nice.
For some, that may not be the best endorsement of Galtier. But it does hint that the 20-year-old would be wanted by his countryman if he ended up taking the Arsenal job.
He is clearly an admirer of Saliba. He may have known about him from their time at Saint-Etienne following the youngster’s arrival in 2016.
And after his struggles to break into Arteta’s plans, surely Saliba will be delighted to work under a manager who wants him at the Emirates.
Perhaps Galtier may prove to be that man.
