The main headlines this morning have largely come from Old Trafford, with a deal for Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann reportedly getting closer to becoming a reality ahead of a potential summer move.
However, Jose Mourinho doesn’t seem to be finished there, with Manchester Evening News claiming that the Red Devils are monitoring Ajax youngster Kasper Dolberg closely ahead of a proposed move.
Dolberg, 19, has been scouted by United for a few months now and it is believed that Mourinho could move for attacking youth, on top of French forward and long-time target Griezmann.
Since making his debut for Ajax in July of last year Dolberg has exploded onto the scene, scoring eleven times in his 26 appearances – including an exceptional 18-minute hat-trick.
As well as his club form, he made his international debut for Denmark in their 4-1 win over Kazakhstan, and it’s hard to argue that he’s one of the hottest young prospects in Europe at the moment.
Dolberg was found by the exact same scout that found United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, John Steen Olsen, and it’s no coincidence that comparisons are already being made between the two. Despite only being 19-years-old, the Dane stands at 6ft 2ins and already has the physicality capable of competing against stubborn Premier League defences – much like United’s current Swedish striker.
Speaking to Manchester Evening News, Olsen labelled Dolberg the ‘perfect player’ and said:
“Kasper is an extraordinary talent, I knew he would be a perfect player for Ajax. Kasper has exceptional qualities: speed, technique, intelligent play and good in the air”
The only issue with a move for Dolberg would be that, at present, United are brimming with attacking options, and if Griezmann and the Dane do move to Old Trafford then surely there would have to be one or two forward options going the other way.
Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney and Jesse Lingard have all played their roles in Mourinho’s side this season, but it’s highly unlikely that the club will keep on so many attackers – so who does he get rid of?
The question does arise though, that why would Mourinho need a young striker at Manchester United when he already has Rashford and Martial, both under 20-years-old, at his disposal? It’s certainly worrying times for their respective futures at the club if a deal for Dolberg is done.
It’s clear that United’s priority is signing Griezmann once the season is over, but it would be hard to completely disregard a deal for the young Ajax forward being completed as well if Mourinho has his way.
