The Independent sensationally claim that Manchester United have come to an agreement with Antoine Griezmann over his wage and squad number ahead of a move to Old Trafford. They claim that the club are likely to have to pay the Frenchman’s full £86 million buy-out fee if they are to sign him this summer though.
The Red Devils are in no hurry to complete the deal and are happy to wait until summer, when Diego Simeone’s club will be more open to negotiations as their transfer ban will be lifted. However, Griezmann’s move could be one of the biggest in world football and follow in the footsteps of international teammate Paul Pogba.
On a less positive note, the Daily Mail report that the club fear that they may be left stuck with Memphis Depay as they doubt that any club will come forward with a bid worth £20 million, which is their current asking price.
The Dutch winger has been hugely disappointing since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven in 2015 and has been frozen out by Jose Mourinho this season and barely even featured in cup competitions. A bid was forthcoming from Lyon, but they offered only £13 million for the forward.
The club has, however, confirmed that they have extended Antonio Valencia’s contract by activating a clause to extend his deal to the summer of 2018. His existing contract had been set to expire in the summer, meaning he was able to speak to foreign clubs already, but he is now tied down to the club.
The 31-year-old has retained his role as a key player under Jose Mourinho this season, having started 23 matches in all competitions already this campaign, and it seems that the manager is keen to retain his services in the future.
