Wilfried Zaha pushing for £40m transfer amid Arsenal and Tottenham interest
Wilfried Zaha has told Crystal Palace he wants to leave, per The Times, amid interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
The Ivorian has reiterated his desires to quit Selhurst Park in the summer and wants a transfer agreed before the Eagles return for pre-season training next month. It is the third-straight window that he has requested a move despite having two years left on his contract.
Zaha believes he has previously been denied moves away from south London by his side’s asking price. Palace set a £100million valuation on the 28-year-old amid interest from Arsenal and Everton two summers ago.
What has been a problem for Palace is that they would owe Manchester United 25 per cent of any profit. The Red Devils sold Zaha to the Eagles in 2016 for just £6m. But he could now get his move, with the Selhurst Park natives more inclined to do business after a decline in form.
That will be received positively at the Emirates and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where interest remains. Mikel Arteta reignited Arsenal’s pursuit in April (90min), but would first have to offload players to fund a move.
Zaha has been the star man at Selhurst Park since returning from his Old Trafford nightmare. But the 16-cap winger only scored three of his 11 goals for the Premier League season in 2021. He also penned the last of his two assists in November.
TBR’s view: Zaha could be gold at Arsenal
While Arsenal will have to offload players before they can sign Zaha, the Gunners could hit gold with a move. The Palace talisman’s form may have declined in 2021, but he has proven what he is capable of producing in a central or wide left position.
Arteta will need players in those positions in the summer amid doubt in the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Bringing in Zaha to replace the Gabon forward would also allow the Gunners to keep Nicolas Pepe on the right-wing, where he thrived at the end of the season.
Arteta is also a big believer in Zaha’s ability, having waxed lyrical over the £120,000-per-week playmaker amid interest in January. He will now have to work on edging out interest from Everton and Tottenham to bring the Ivorian to north London.
“I think he’s a terrific player and I think the impact he’s had in the Premier League in the last few years has been phenomenal,” Arteta said, via the Express. “His ability to create chances on his own is unique. We know Wilf and the type of talent he is.”
