Arsenal willing to listen to offers for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as Chelsea route opens
According to The Telegraph, Arsenal are willing to listen to offers for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the summer transfer window.
The Gunners handed the Gabon international a new £350,000-per-week contract last summer. But he enters the off-season following his worst campaign in north London to date.
Aubameyang scored 10 goals in 29 Premier League games while offering three assists as the captain of Mikel Arteta’s side. It matches his worst single-season tally from the 2017/18 term but from 16 more appearances after arriving at the Emirates for £56million in January.
In each of Aubameyang’s previous two full campaigns at Arsenal, the 31-year-old scored 22 goals in 36 matches. He also missed the most games of his Gunners career through injury or sickness in 2020/21, sitting out six fixtures.
Arsenal are now open to offers for the former Borussia Dortmund striker. Aubameyang is likely to be unhappy after Arteta’s side failed to qualify for a European competition, as well.
The 62-cap forward may stay in the Premier League should he leave the Emirates, however. Frank Lampard sought his services while in charge of Chelsea last summer. But the Blues blocked a deal, deeming Aubameyang to be too old and expensive.
Yet interest from Stamford Bridge this summer is not ruled out following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival. The German stated earlier in the year that Aubameyang “will still always be my player” and that the pair are still in regular contact.
Chelsea are in the market for a striker this year after Romelu Lukaku declared he will stay at Inter Milan. The Belgian was their most realistic target to Erling Haaland or Harry Kane. Tuchel could now point to Aubameyang scoring 79 goals in 95 games across all competitions during his tenure at Dortmund.
TBR’s view: Arsenal selling Aubameyang to Chelsea unlikely
Aubameyang certainly endured an underwhelming season at Arsenal. The striker rarely looked like the solution to their problems and instead caused issues. He angered Arteta in March when his poor timekeeping returned, leading to his omission against Tottenham.
But Arteta is a firm believer in Aubameyang and sung his praises in February. “He is a big piece of our puzzle,” the Gunners boss said, via the Independent. “You saw today [with a hat-trick against Leeds United] that when he is firing, he is a difficult player to play against.”
Arsenal could now look to cut their ties just a year into his thee-year, £55m contract. But selling to Chelsea would be unlikely, knowing what Aubameyang can offer when in form. He also destroyed the Bundesliga with Tuchel, which would scare the Gunners.
Yet Arsenal may have few options on who is willing to buy a 31-year-old Aubameyang on a very lucrative contract. Barcelona were interested last year but have just signed Sergio Aguero. Manchester City were also keen, only for Pep Guardiola to have a change of heart.
