Why Oliver Glasner could genuinely leave Crystal Palace

It has been a very quiet summer for Crystal Palace – aside from legal battles against UEFA.

The Eagles are yet to improve their squad following a historic FA Cup win last season, with only Walter Benitez and Borna Sosa arriving at Selhurst Park – who are not even exactly additions to the squad, instead mere replacements for Matt Turner and Ben Chilwell.

Oliver Glasner has even voiced his discontent at the lack of recruitment, telling Kronen Zeitung: “Even though all the players are still here, we haven’t made the most of the transfer window so far. I was promised that we would be more active and bring in the new players earlier this year.

“As of now, I have 17 outfield players! I hope we don’t lose any more. If that happens and we get four new ones on deadline day like last year, another false start is possible.”

Some Crystal Palace fans might feel Oliver Glasner is just trying to put pressure on Steve Parish to deliver – although the Austrian has already proved on two occasions that he will not settle for less.

VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt exits prove Oliver Glasner will walk if he wants to

The 50-year-old has no room for sentiment, and will not simply stay with Crystal Palace due to the FA Cup win.

Glasner resigned from his role at VfL Wolfsburg back in 2021 despite only just finishing fourth in the Bundesliga and consequently qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, following a breakdown in his relationship with Sporting Director Jorg Schmadtke over recruitment.

The man born in Salzburg then moved to Eintracht Frankfurt in May 2021, where more success – and disagreements – followed.

Glasner won the UEFA Europa League in the 2021/22 campaign, before qualifying for the UEFA Conference League and reaching the DFB-Pokal final the following season, but even still, he did not get too attached, and left at the end of that term due to his dissatisfaction.

German news outlet Sport Bild stated at the time that his exit came down to a lack of investment in what he perceived to be a thin squad, although Markus Krosche – Director of Football – wanted the Austrian to use academy products such as Hrvoje Smolcic and Faride Alidou instead.

Crystal Palace are doing themselves no favours amid contract talks with Oliver Glasner

The topic of a resignation aside, the FA Cup winner could simply leave SE25 as a free agent when his contract expires next summer.

TBR Football revealed back in April that Glasner wants assurances from Parish that Crystal Palace will look to make serious progress, and become regulars in the battle for a place in the top eight of the Premier League before he pens a contract extension.

That is yet to happen, so based on what occurred at VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, Crystal Palace fans should be feeling a bit uneasy about the future.
