Report: Arsenal have bid rejected for 'exceptional' Premier League ace; club demanding £50m
Brighton and Hove Albion have rejected a £40m bid from Arsenal for defender Ben White.
According to Sky Sports, the Gunners will go back in with an improved offer for the ace. Talks are ongoing between the two clubs.
Reports over the north London giants’ interest in the figure emerged last week.
White was in decent form for the Seagulls last season, appearing in 39 appearances across all competition.
It earned him a call-up to England’s 33-man provisional squad for Euro 2020. He dropped out, however, was recalled following an injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Speaking at the end of May, Brighton chairman Tony Bloom gave interested parties a boost regarding th 23-year-old. He claimed that things will be different in the next two or three transfer windows than they have historically been.
Jamie Redknapp called him ‘exceptional‘.
TBR View: White bid a sign of the dysfunctionality at Arsenal
The bid for White is a sign of his dysfunctional everything is at Arsenal Football Club.
From behind-the-scenes to on the field, everything about the club has been going pear-shaped for the last two years.
As if finishing eighth in the Premier League wasn’t bad enough, going on to bid £40m for a White is a staggering move.
His performances for the coastal outfit didn’t warrant anywhere near such a steep figure. But, that’s the current market, where Englishmen go for far more than they’re worth.
It proves even more baffling when you analyse the players available to the Gunners. The likes of William Saliba and Rob Holding are the club’s options at right centre-back.
Saliba was compared to Raphael Varane and Virgil van Dijk by his old youth team boss.
However, it seems as though Mikel Arteta isn’t too keen on the ace with questions over his future.
White may well develop in to a fine centre-half, but, doesn’t warrant an expensive price tag right now.
