Where Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak & Bruno Guimaraes ranked in top 100 players

You could argue that Newcastle United’s three most important players are Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.

It’s up to you as to where you rank them, with the currently injured Sven Botman also deserving of a mention, as well as the underrated Joelinton.

All of these players have been key in Newcastle’s rise under Eddie Howe, including reaching the Champions League last season.

With those performances, comes reputation and it has resulted in Gordon, Isak and Guimaraes all making FourFourTwo’s top 100 players right now.

From Serie A to the Premier League, players from across Europe’s major leagues were included, with the top five dominated by Real Madrid and Manchester City players.

Vinicius Jr topped the list, with Erling Haaland second, then England’s Jude Bellingham, Madrid’s new superstar star Kylian Mbappe fourth and Rodri coming in at five.

The lowest-ranked Newcastle player on the list was Gordon, who was 89th, ahead of players like Tottenham’s Son Heung-min.

A little further down, Isak was placed 54th, he scored 21 Premier League goals last season and was ranked ahead of one of Europe’s sought-after strikers Victor Osimhen.

But the highest-rated Newcastle player in the top 100 belonged to the ever-popular adopted Geordie, Guimaraes, who came in at 47, ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning midfielder, Aurelien Tchouameni.

Gordon was ranked 89th: “England’s wealth of options in attack can be summed up in one stat from the 2024 European Championships,” wrote FourFourTwo. “Anthony Gordon spent a grand total of six minutes on the pitch. Whilst he does have some tough competition at international level, it is remarkable considering Gordon’s outstanding consistency in 2023/24. Gordon deservedly claimed the Player of the Year award at Newcastle United in his first full season with the Magpies. Ferocious speed and improved decision making has made him one of the best wingers in the top flight.”

Isak was 54th and FourFourTwo added: “Alexander Isak has established himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League since joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022. The 2023/24 season was the Sweden international’s best yet: he netted 21 goals in just 30 top flight appearances, alerting some of Europe’s biggest clubs and sparking inevitable transfer rumours. But the 25-year-old remains at Newcastle, who have ambitions to reach the very top. With Isak leading the line, their chances of success will be significantly higher.”

Guimaraes was 47th: “Leave it to a Brazilian defensive midfielder to also be a reliable source of goals and assists,” wrote FourFourTwo. “Bruno had an excellent campaign even as Newcastle laboured at times last season, netting a few crucial strikes along the way. That helped make up Eddie Howe’s mind to hand the charismatic Bruno the captain’s armband over the summer. His performances have suffered a bit over the start of the season, in truth, which Howe puts down to his having had a hectic year playing constantly both on Tyneside and for Brazil. Not surprising if he needs a rest, though: at time of writing, Bruno’s missed just one game for club or country in all competitions since March 2023, and that was for a yellow card totting up suspension.”

Can Newcastle return to the Champions League?

The first aim will be to get back into Europe because they don’t have any midweek fixtures to deal with, but Champions League football is the dream.

Newcastle tasted it again recently, loved it and need it back on their shores, especially if they want to keep their star players.

Gordon is already attracting transfer interest, whilst there has always been noise around Guimaraes and Isak.

That will only grow if they don’t return to Europe’s elite competition because those players are proving that they belong right at the top.
