A report has shared what senior figures behind the scenes at Newcastle United have said about how likely new signings are in the final days of the January transfer window.

Like many Premier League sides, Newcastle are yet to make a single signing in this window. It has been a very quiet month so far across the division.

Of course, those who have not been following the Magpies for the last few months will wonder what they are playing at given the wealth of their owners. However, Eddie Howe‘s side have their hands tied due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

Newcastle senior figures unsure if new signings will come in this month

As reported by The Athletic, Newcastle’s focus is on selling rather than buying. With that, most fans appear to have lost hope of Howe being able to bolster his ranks before the deadline passes.

Newcastle had apparently hoped to agree a loan deal for Kalvin Phillips before the window even opened. But Phillips now looks much more likely to end up at West Ham.

And The Athletic is now suggesting that senior figures at Newcastle have claimed over the last few days that it is a toss of a coin whether new signings come in.

Magpies can keep options open ahead of the deadline

It would be a big boost to Newcastle if they could welcome a new signing. Unfortunately, this campaign has been a real struggle in comparison with last year. They were knocked out of the Champions League group-stages – albeit, in controversial circumstances – and sit in mid-table in the league.

Having said that, it is going to take a huge effort for the Magpies to make the top four again. So there may be little point bringing in another signing who is not going to improve the squad in the long-term.

You can see why it is a flip of a coin. Newcastle have little motivation to panic buy. However, as moves start to happen closer and closer to the deadline, the right player may perhaps just come onto the market at the right time.
