What people at Genoa are already thinking about Tottenham loanee Djed Spence

Alasdair Gold has claimed that Genoa are already ‘very happy’ with the impact Djed Spence has made at the club since joining from Tottenham Hotspur.

Spence was included as part of a deal for Tottenham to sign centre-back Radu Dragusin last month.

The 23-year-old joined Genoa on a loan deal until the end of the campaign, with the Serie A club having the option to sign Spence for around £6 million this summer.

Of course, the Spurs defender spent the first half of the season on loan at Leeds United but his stay at Elland Road was cut short.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke suggested concerns over the defender’s attitude, which ultimately saw his loan deal terminated.

Despite a surprise return from Yorkshire, it would appear that Spence is settling in well at Genoa.

Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs, Gold admitted that Spurs had little interest in Spence before including him in the Dragusin deal.

But the former Middlesborough full-back is impressing in Italy, with Genoa seemingly delighted with his displays so far.

“Djed Spence, they’ve done very well [to offload him],” the Football.London journalist said. “There was no interest in him whatsoever when he came back from Leeds. So to get him involved in the Genoa deal for Dragusin…

“To be fair to Djed Spence, he’s doing very well at Genoa. They’re very happy with him.

“He’s started terrifically. He’s played on the left, on the right, he’s doing everything they’re asking of him.”

Spence arrived at Spurs back in the summer of 2022 after an exceptional loan spell at Nottingham Forest in the Championship.

Many believed he’d fit Antonio Conte’s system perfectly as an attack-minded wing-back. But the Englishman didn’t manage a single start under the Italian and spent the second half of last season on loan at Stade-Rennais.

Reports have also suggested that Ange Postecoglou was unimpressed with Spence’s attitude in pre-season, which led to him joining Leeds.

It has been widely reported that Spence has no future at Spurs while Postecoglou remains in charge and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him move on permanently this summer.

Genoa seem to be impressed with the full-back’s displays so far and if he continues to perform, they may well just take up that £6 million option to sign Spence.
