Ruben Amorim has officially started his role as the new manager of Manchester United.

The former Sporting gaffer took charge of the Red Devils earlier this week, and the excitement around this new era is palpable.

Amorim joins United as an exciting young coach with a track record not only of improving players but winning trophies.

The future could be bright at Old Trafford under Amorim, but there is still an element of mystery around this appointment.

Indeed any United fans would be forgiven for not knowing the ins-and-outs of how Sporting CP have been playing in recent times, but, luckily, speaking on The Transfers Podcast, Duncan Castles has shared some insight into how Amorim likes his teams to set up.

Ruben Amorim is similar to Antonio Conte

Castles shared some insight on the new Manchester United manager

The journalist says that he’s spoken to other coaches about Amorim, and they’ve often compared the Portuguese boss to Antonio Conte in terms of style of play.

Conte was criticised for his time at Tottenham, but during his first season at Chelsea he was a revalation as the Blues won the league title.

“Talking to a couple of coaches about the way he plays, they noted the comparisons to Antonio Conte’s Chelsea, particularly his first season at Chelsea, having Victor Gyokeres as this dominant forward in the way that Diego Costa was for Conte, playing with three centre backs and then wing backs who were converted wingers, defending with a flat five, getting the ball forward quickly from defence to attack,” Castles said.

“They see lots of similarities in that style of play, but kind of emphasised how fundamental Gyokeres was to the second title win for Ruben Amorim. As you say, he won during the Covid season, in slightly strange conditions, then second in the Portuguese League the season after that, then fourth, and then they come back and win the title last year and far ahead again this year.”

How will Manchester United line up under Ruben Amorim?

As Castles says, Amorim likes to use a 3-4-3 system, and it will be interesting to see how he implements that at Old Trafford.

Amorim likes to use centre-backs on the opposite sides to their preferred foot in order to funnel the ball into the centre of the park, and he also likes to have a fast, physical striker up front, perfect for Rasmus Hojlund.

Bruno Fernandes could move into a wider role rather than playing as one of Amorim’s two box-to-box midfielders, similar to how Pedro Goncalves operated at Sporting.

However, Owen Hargreaves believes Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford will improve under Amorim, so perhaps they will start in the wide areas.

If that XI can click in this United team, Amorim could have something very exciting on his hands at Old Trafford.

Of course, whether or not these players can return to their best form remains to be seen, but it wi
