What Jose Mourinho once said about Spurs striker target Edin Dzeko

Tottenham Hotspur may already be turning their attention to next summer, with reports from Calciomercatoweb over the weekend claiming that Spurs want Edin Dzeko.

Dzeko is out of contract at Inter Milan at the end of the season. He reportedly wants to stay and sign a new deal at San Siro. But it is not yet clear whether he will agree fresh terms with the Nerazzurri.

And that has left Tottenham lurking in the background. Antonio Conte would be interested in signing the 36-year-old on a free transfer as cover and competition for Harry Kane.

Tottenham want Dzeko

The links with Dzeko may divide Spurs fans. Obviously, he is not the long-term answer to how Tottenham provide support for Kane. However, he is continuing to score goals in the twilight of his career. He already has nine for Inter this season.

Dzeko is no stranger to Premier League fans. He has won two titles with Manchester City. And he has 50 goals in 130 games in the competition.

It was during that time at the Etihad Stadium that now-former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho suggested that he should have won the 2014 Footballer of the Year award ahead of Luis Suarez.

Mourinho labelled the forward ‘spectacular’ as he explained why he deserved the award.

“My player of the year would always be from the champions,” he said, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

“Manchester City need a point. I would say a City player and I would choose Dzeko. He was the third striker at the beginning of the season and when the team needed him, in crucial moments, he made the difference. He has 16 goals. Sixteen for the third striker is something spectacular. He’s not just a goalscorer. He assists, he plays.”

Obviously, that was some time ago. But Dzeko has failed to reach double figures for goals in all competitions in just one season since then. That includes well over a century of goals for Roma. And his record for Inter works out at better than a goal every three games.

It would not necessarily be the most exciting move. And some supporters may be concerned by the prospect of signing someone who will be 37 by next summer.

But Dzeko continues to show that he has a lot more to give before he hangs up his boots.
