'What I'm hearing': Journalist has fresh transfer update after speaking to 'sources at Arsenal'

Charles Watts has told his own Youtube channel that Arsenal sources are trying to temper expectations over Nuno Tavares.

There has been some suggestions that Arsenal are now at very advanced stages of their deal with Benfica.

Indeed, Record claimed yesterday that the left-back was ready to sign a five-year deal with the Gunners.

However, Watts has now spoken to sources both in Portugal and at the Emirates Stadium and their updates have been slightly different.

The Goal.com journalist says that while those at Arsenal have confirmed that Mikel Arteta’s side are interested in the 21-year-old, the deal is perhaps not quite as close to completion as others have claimed.

“Nuno Tavares, a young Benfica left-back. The back-up Arsenal have been looking for for Kieran Tierney, that looks like it could well be the young Portuguese defender,” he said.

“Arsenal are in talks with Benfica. Sources in Portugal are suggesting that it’s very close, but sources at Arsenal are trying to temper things a little bit, saying we’re not at that sort to stage yet.

“But from what I’m hearing there is growing confidence that this is a deal which could be done.

“Nothing is agreed yet, and nothing is signed. I am told there are other clubs in for him as well, but Arsenal are at the front of the queue trying to get this deal done for around £6 or £7 million.”

Speed essential?

Despite the update, Arsenal will surely be keen to get the transfer over the line sooner rather than later.

Tavares is fairly inexperienced and may well benefit from having as long to get used to his new teammates over pre-season as possible.

It seems unlikely that Tavares will start for Arsenal in their opening game, as long as Kieran Tierney is fit.

But his arrival should offer Arteta more cover in the full-back position, which could be crucial as the season progresses.
