What Eddie Howe ‘privately’ told key Newcastle figures about Liverpool target Alexander Isak weeks ago

Alexander Isak informed Newcastle United that he is ready to explore a move away from the club amid interest from Liverpool.

The 25-year-old has been terrific under Eddie Howe over the years, and he took his game to a whole new level in the 2024/25 season.

Isak not only helped Newcastle qualify for the Champions League, but he also scored in the Carabao Cup final to help end the club’s long trophy drought.

The Magpies are desperate to keep hold of Isak this summer, but Howe sensed something was wrong several weeks ago.

What Eddie Howe told key Newcastle figures about Alexander Isak weeks ago

Almost every club in the world would love to sign Alexander Isak.

The Newcastle United star is one of the best centre-forwards on the planet, and he is capable of delivering at the highest level for any team.

The Magpies spent a lot of money on Isak when they signed him from Real Sociedad – £63 million – but that fee looks like a bargain now.

Liverpool told Newcastle that they are ready to sign Isak in a £120 million deal recently. However, before that happened, Howe had a chat with the decision-makers of the club.

The Independent claim that the Toon boss ‘privately told prominent figures at the club this summer that he was concerned’ about Isak’s situation.

Those concerns, Miguel Delaney claims, have been there for weeks, before Liverpool even made their approach. But it was only on Thursday, after Isak was left out of Newcastle’s squad, that reports revealed he had asked to leave the club.

As things stand, Liverpool are the most likely destination for Isak should he leave, but the decision remains in Newcastle United’s hands.

Liverpool’s current stance on Alexander Isak

Liverpool’s approach to Newcastle for Isak made it clear that they are interested in him.

However, since that move, the Reds have completed the signing of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79 million.

Liverpool have the PSR headroom to sign Isak too, but the report claims that their ‘current stance is that they are comfortable with their options at centre-forward and feel they have their number-nine in Ekitike’.

However, the Premier League champions have refused to rule out a move to sign Isak in the coming days or weeks.

It remains to be seen how Newcastle will handle this situation.
