Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr’s Senegal crashed out of the African Cup of Nations yesterday, but James Maddison was still impressed by the midfielder’s display.

Senegal were among the favourites to win the AFCON this year, but in what was a shock result last night, they drew 1-1 and then lost 5-4 on penalties against Ivory Coast. Sarr will now return to Tottenham.

James Maddison impressed by Tottenham teammate Pape Matar Sarr

Tottenham signed Pape Matar Sarr from FC Metz back in the summer of 2021.

The Senegalese midfielder was a huge prospect, but he was viewed as a player who wasn’t ready for the Premier League at the time.

After a year on loan at Metz, Sarr returned but barely got any opportunities last season. Since Ange Postecoglou‘s arrival, however, the 21-year-old has been a regular and he’s been brilliant.

Sarr’s fantastic performances have carried on at the African Cup of Nations too. He started each of Senegal’s last three games and even picked up an assist in the 3-1 win over Cameroon.

Sadly for the 21-year-old, his side crashed out of the competition yesterday.

Watching the game in extra time, Tottenham star James Maddison posted on his Instagram Story: “Supporting my boy Pape_Matar_Sarr_15.

Sarr is the present and future of Tottenham’s midfield

Tottenham Hotspur have been a great side to watch since Ange Postecoglou took charge of the club, and Sarr has been incredible under him.

Nobody really expected the 21-year-old to play a big part for Spurs this term. He was just viewed as a youngster and some at the end of last season even expected him to go out on loan.

However, Postecoglou saw something in him, and Sarr has repaid his manager’s faith with a number of fantastic performances in the middle of the park.

Sarr is still 21 years old. He has an ‘absolutely immense future‘ ahead of him, and we’re sure he’ll be a mainstay in Spurs’ midfield for years to come.
