‘What a moron’: Chris Sutton shocked by what reported Arsenal target did at World Cup today

Arsenal have been linked with Argentina international Leandro Paredes in recent months.

Back in August, Gianluca Di Marzio reported that the Gunners had their sights on the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder.

Paredes ended up joining Juventus on loan in the end, but Arsenal could be trying for his services once again.

The 28-year-old is struggling for game time at Juve and football.london claimed that the Gunners may launch another bid.

Arsenal are flying high in the Premier League and Europa League, and Mikel Arteta could well bolster his ranks in pursuit of glory.

Paredes is in Argentina’s squad for the 2022 World Cup, and has made three appearances in the tournament.

He came off the bench in the quarter-final clash with the Netherlands, where he was involved in a flashpoint incident.

In the 89th minute, Paredes slid in and fouled Nathan Ake, before then seemingly booting the ball into the Dutch dugout.

‘What is he thinking?’

He earned a booking for his actions, and BBC Sport’s pundits were fuming over what he did.

“Leandro Paredes just booted that ball into the Netherlands dug out,” Martin Keown said on BBC One, via the BBC Sport website.

“He has caused a riot there. He is lucky. The foul was a booking in itself.”

Chris Sutton’s assessment of the reported Arsenal target was somewhat more brutal.

“It’s all going off,” he said. “What a moron. What is he thinking? Leandro Paredes just lost it.”

Obviously in such a high-stakes match, emotions will run high.

Nonetheless, if Arsenal scouts were keeping tabs on Paredes, that could well have counted against him.
