West Ham must target Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock
West Ham completed one of the two most inspired pieces of business of the January transfer window with their deal to bring Jesse Lingard to the London Stadium.
Lingard went on to score nine goals in just 16 appearances for the Hammers to help David Moyes’s side book their ticket to the Europa League for the coming campaign.
Unfortunately, his success has probably counted against the Irons. His asking price has certainly increased.
And Manchester United have been left with a decision to make over whether they keep the England international this season.
It remains if West Ham manage to bring Lingard back.
But should they fail, perhaps one name they must consider is the player who may have something to say to those who deem Lingard to be the signing of the January window in the Premier League.
West Ham should look to take Joe Willock on loan in transfer window
Joe Willock joined Newcastle after struggling to force his way into Mikel Arteta’s plans at Arsenal.
The 21-year-old only made two league starts for the Gunners before leaving. Meanwhile, Newcastle looked to be in serious danger of being involved in a relegation scrap.
So few could have foreseen just how well Willock would do. He returned to Arsenal having scored eight times. Seven of those goals came in his final seven appearances for the Magpies.
Crucially, those goals played a key role in keeping Steve Bruce’s men up.
Two of the goals were winners. Two more were equalisers. And Newcastle only lost one of the eight games he scored in.
Nevertheless, it is not yet clear whether he has a role at Arsenal this season.
Newcastle are reportedly hopeful of loaning Willock again. However, while his future is undecided, West Ham should surely consider asking the question.
Previous reports suggested the Gunners value Willock at £30 million. So a loan move could be a real coup for the Hammers.
And Willock would surely be tempted to consider a move to West Ham. They can offer Europa League football. And they will have their sights set much higher than Newcastle.
Admittedly, Willock seems to have developed a strong relationship with those on Tyneside.
But if he wants to make the grade at Arsenal, he may need to consider a ruthless decision if a team higher up the league comes calling.
West Ham would surely benefit from adding another goalscoring midfielder who offers lots of versatility to their ranks.
Perhaps they should throw their hat into the ring before he does seal a move elsewhere.
