Report shares Newcastle transfer budget; could need £30m for Joe Willock
Steve Bruce is set to be handed £50 million to spend during the transfer window, but The Sun on Sunday (13/6; page 63) reports that Newcastle United may need to pay £30 million to sign Joe Willock from Arsenal.
Bruce is reportedly set to be rewarded after keeping the Magpies in the Premier League.
Of course, their campaign ended with a superb run. They won five of their last eight and only lost two of their final 13 fixtures.
One of their key reasons for their success was the loan signing of Joe Willock. The Gunners youngster scored eight goals, including seven in a row at the end of the season.
The Sun on Sunday (13/6; page 63) reports that he could be a key target in this window. But Arsenal could ask for as much as £30 million.
It is a fee that Newcastle would be able to afford. But it would eat up more than half of Bruce’s budget, with the report suggesting that he will have £50 million to spend.
Scope for Newcastle to produce some shrewd moves in the transfer market
It is perhaps not the kind of budget that will necessarily move Newcastle too far up the table.
But it does leave the door open for the Magpies to land a couple of impressive names.
Many clubs are unlikely to part with huge sums over the coming months. So there is an opportunity for those who are willing to spend a bit.
Of course, many Newcastle fans will be hoping that the transfer kitty available to Bruce increases the likelihood of an agreement being reached with Arsenal.
Willock would be a bargain at £30 million if the Gunners loanee managed to get close to replicating his form from this past season.
And a move for that figure would still leave Bruce with £20 million to spend elsewhere – if reports prove to be correct.
