Report: West Ham now in talks to sign 'fantastic' international player, a day after Tottenham enquired

West Ham United are in talks to pull off a surprise move to bring Barcelona’s Memphis Depay to the club, reports The Guardian.

Depay is free to leave Barcelona for nothing after being told he won’t be part of the club’s plans under Xavi. The Catalan club are keen to shift his wages from the books as they endure growing concerns and controversies about their financial plans.

And according to the Guardian, it is indeed West Ham who are moving to sign Depay. It’s reported that the Hammers are at an early stage of talks with the Dutch forward and the London club hold genuine belief they can land the former Manchester United man.

Depay has struggled to make an impact with Barcelona after rebuilding his career with Lyon. However, he is a regular for the Netherlands and has a fine record at international level. And on a free-transfer, it seems West Ham can’t resist adding more quality to the ranks.

The Hammers’ move comes just a day after reports claimed Tottenham had made a move to Depay as well. It was suggested Depay could also be signing for Juventus, although it appears it is indeed the Hammers who are in pole position right now.

TBR’s View: Depay To West Ham A Masterstroke

That is, if he can get to his best form under David Moyes.

Depay is a fine player who is proven on the biggest stages and there is no doubt West Ham are improving the squad by adding him. After missing out on Jesse Lingard and a few others, Hammers fans would not argue that adding Depay alongside fellow new boy Gianluca Scamacca is a good window.

If West Ham can pull this off and sign Depay, then it’s a welcome addition for David Moyes, who has made no secret of his desire to add new faces.
