West Ham being cautious in Harrison Ashby contract talks - journalist

Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that West Ham are being cautious in contract talks with Harrison Ashby despite the right-back attracting interest from Leeds United.

Ashby’s future at the London Stadium is in some doubt, it seems. His contract with the Hammers expires at the end of the end of the season. And he is being pursued elsewhere.

Reports claimed that Leeds want the 20-year-old having already lured Sonny Perkins to Elland Road in the summer.

Leeds have done some superb business when it comes to signing young players from other clubs in recent years. So you could understand why Ashby may be tempted by the chance to join the Whites.

‘A situation that is going to be ongoing’

What may also perhaps help Leeds is that West Ham are not prepared to do absolutely anything to make sure the youngster does not leave.

Jones shared that the Irons are wary of taking a stance of keeping Ashby at all costs.

“West Ham have to try and sort out the situation,” he told Give Me Sport.

“They’re very cautious about giving him a big, new contract because of the knock-on effect it might have to other players within the set-up. This is a situation that is going to be ongoing for a little bit.”

West Ham fans may have conflicting views about the prospect of losing Ashby. Clearly, he is a ‘great‘ talent with a potentially huge future ahead.

But when Perkins left for Leeds, many supporters reacted by suggesting that they were happy to lose him if he was keen to move on.

And if Ashby is going to dig his heels in, they may be happy to open the door for him on the way out also.

Interest from elsewhere does West Ham few favours if talks do prove to be problematic. But given how tough it is going to be for Ashby to break into the side on a regular basis, it makes sense that they are not breaking the bank to ensure that he stays.
