Leeds remain keen on signing Harrison Ashby - journalist

Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Leeds United remain keen on signing Harrison Ashby as West Ham continue to try and agree a new contract with the 20-year-old.

Leeds have been one of the most proactive Premier League sides when it comes to signing some of the best young players at other clubs in recent years.

And of course, one deal they did this summer saw Sonny Perkins move to Elland Road after he failed to agree a new contract with the Hammers.

They tried to land another West Ham starlet before the deadline. Reports claimed that they looked to sign Ashby from the Irons amid doubts over his future.

The right-back’s current deal expires next summer. And Jones has suggested that Leeds are not going away while his future remains up in the air.

“They do still like him. I think, from here, it’s going to depend on how West Ham decide to deal with him,” he told Give Me Sport.

“Whether they reassess his contract situation and they can convince him of their own plans, there’s a lot to be sorted out there over the next few months.”

Leeds remain keen on Harrison Ashby

Ashby finds himself in a tricky position. Vladimir Coufal is obviously one of the first names on the West Ham team sheet. Meanwhile, Ben Johnson is clearly a youngster David Moyes thinks very highly of.

At Leeds meanwhile, Rasmus Kristensen arrived this summer. And Luke Ayling is just making his way back from injury and will hope to contribute for a few years yet.

There is also Cody Drameh waiting in the wings. And Harvey Sutcliffe has impressed for the under-21s.

If he moves to Leeds therefore, you would imagine that Ashby has received some assurances over his pathway to the first-team fold at Elland Road. He is a player Mark Noble labelled a ‘great‘ talent.

Some West Ham fans may have been left scratching their heads wondering why Perkins decided to leave earlier this year.

But he is now knocking on the first-team door at Leeds. And that may be something Ashby struggles to ignore as he now weighs up a decision on his future.
