“We’re finished”: Some Everton fans are not happy with links to English defender
Everton transfer speculation is linking them with Roma defender Chris Smalling – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter are not very happy with the news.
Gianluca Di Marzio has reported on his official website that the 31-year-old’s future could be away from current Italian club Roma.
It is understood that Everton have made contact with the Serie A outfit to request information about the centre-back. Additionally, an offer could be accepted if it’s deemed suitable.
Smalling has rebuilt his reputation in the last few years in Rome.
The 6ft 4in centre-back is a key player in defence for Roma. Previously, he made 323 senior appearances for Manchester United during the bulk of his career.
He’s a 31-time capped England international with so much experience at the top level, albeit he’s not at the Euros this summer with the Three Lions. In addition, he hasn’t represented his country since 2017.
Everton fans not convinced by Chris Smalling rumours
A selection of Everton supporters on social media don’t want to entertain the idea of targeting Smalling. In truth, there has been a blunt reaction to the speculation.
There is no doubt he would bring a wealth of experience to Goodison Park. But, he’s been playing outside of English football for a couple of years, and it would be a big ask for him to make a huge Premier League return.
The centre-back position is one area of the pitch at Everton where they have solid options. Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate and Mason Holagte provide real depth in the heart of defence. However, the fresh report suggests they want more cover .
