‘We will see’: Sporting director says £14.7m Arsenal target could move for free next summer
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will already have one eye on the upcoming transfer window.
After missing out on a central midfielder in the summer, and losing Gabriel Jesus to injury, there are gaps in the squad to fill.
Against the odds, Barcelona managed to take a number of big signings in the summer, despite various sanctions.
They brought in Hector Bellerin from Arsenal, but also had to move a number of players on.
One player who did stay at Camp Nou was Memphis Depay.
The Dutchman was left on the bench until his future was decided, but managed just two La Liga appearances.
A thigh injury ruled him out of action, but he managed to get fit just before the World Cup.
Joe Cole mentioned on commentary that he appeared to bulk up a lot while recovering.
The forward has been considered by Arsenal in the past, and could be a replacement for Jesus.
However, Cruyff has ruled out Depay leaving in January, but not the possibility of him moving for free next summer.
Arsenal target Depay could leave for free next summer
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Cruyff said: “Why should we sell Depay in January if it’s difficult to sign new players because of Financial Fair Play?
“He’s always been a great professional.
“He can be really helpful. Free agent in June? We will see in the next months”
The £14.7m forward looks to be in desperate need of a new challenge.
As a centre-forward, he’s never going to replace Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona.
He can also play on either wing, and that versatility will certain make him an interesting prospect for the Gunners.
Although Depay could leave Barcelona for free next summer, Arsenal’s need for a forward is much more urgent.
Depay would be a great signing, as he could initially replace the Brazilian striker before adding competition across the front line.
Arsenal aren’t the only north London side interested in Depay.
Tottenham have also recently been linked, and given the competition to sign him, Depay may be happy to wait until the summer to decide his next move.
