Report: Tottenham set on monitoring Memphis Depay during World Cup
January is looking set to be an absolutely crucial month for Antonio Conte’s men. They remain fourth in the Premier League. But there is real discontent about the direction they are heading in right now.
Spurs have won two of their last seven games in all competitions. And they have conceded the opening goal in all seven of those fixtures.
Tottenham monitoring Depay
Tottenham have their eye on a range of targets heading into the January window. And one of the names on their radar is Depay.
90min reports that he could get the green light to leave Barca in January. And he could even depart Camp Nou on a free transfer after a tough spell in Catalonia.
Tottenham are planning to watch the 28-year-old during the World Cup. And 90min suggests that Depay is open to returning to the Premier League, with a move to London appealing to the forward.
Depay would be a risky signing for Spurs. He has a fantastic record across his career. And he still finished last season as Barcelona’s joint top goalscorer.
Tottenham also have to sign another striker unless they are going to recall Dane Scarlett from his loan. It was concerning that Conte had to start Harry Kane against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
Depay would be able to play up front. But, much like Richarlison and Son Heung-min, he could play in a couple of other roles when Kane is also in the side.
However, he has struggled with injuries. And even on a free transfer, he would not necessarily come cheap. He also had a tough time in the Premier League previously.
Depay would definitely have the potential to be a ‘fantastic‘ signing. But it would be something of a gamble.
So it will be very interesting to see what will happen should he rip things up at the World Cup this winter.
