Liverpool won the Premier League last season and there’s an argument to make that they’ve also won this summer transfer window.
Indeed, the Reds’ summer spending so far has been very impressive.
Florian Wirtz has arrived in a British-record deal, Hugo Ekitike impressed on his debut, while Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have filled two important gaps at full-back.
Meanwhile, Alexander Isak could still arrive.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Wayne Rooney has been giving his Premier League predictions, and he’s made an interesting claim about one of Liverpool’s signings.
Indeed, when asked to name the most important signing in the Premier League this year, the former England captain actually picked Jeremie Frimpong ahead of the likes of Wirtz.

Jeremie Frimpong the most important signing of the summer
Rooney was asked to give his Premier League predictions.
Despite being an Evertonian and a Manchester United legend, Rooney was actually very complimentary to Liverpool here.
Indeed, Rooney picked Liverpool to win the title, he picked Mohamed Salah to win the Golden Boot, while he chose Rio Ngumoha as the breakout star of the season.
Perhaps most interestingly though, Rooney picked Jeremie Frimpong as the most important signing of the season.
“Most important signing?” Rooney was asked.
“Jeremie Frimpong,” Rooney responded.
Frimpong has been the cheapest of Liverpool’s four major additions this summer, but Rooney thinks he could be the most important.
Jeremie Frimpong has the most important role at Liverpool
Rooney says Frimpong may be the most important signing of the summer.
Of course, that sounds preposterous when you consider the amount of money that has been spent on players like Wirtz and Ekitike, but, in context, you have to say he’s right.
Frimpong has to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool, and Alexander-Arnold was perhaps the most high-profile departure in the entire Premier League this summer.
| Liverpool signings | Player(s) replaced |
| Florian Wirtz | Dominik Szoboszlai* |
| Jeremie Frimpong | Trent Alexander-Arnold |
| Milos Kerkez | Andy Robertson* |
| Hugo Ekitike | Darwin Nunez/Diogo Jota |
Even across the Premier League, big signings such as Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko aren’t replacing players who are as high-profile and as talented as Alexander-Arnold, and Frimpong has an important role here as he has massive shoes to fill at Anfield.
