Wayne Rooney claims Man Utd only have one player who would get into Alex Ferguson’s team

Manchester United aren’t the force they once were in English football, that’s for sure.

There have been positives to take away this season under Michael Carrick, but the Red Devils are a far cry from the team they once were under Alex Ferguson.

Winning league titles became a hobby for Manchester United under Fergie, while they also won their fair share of domestic cups and European honours too.

Speaking on Romario TV, Wayne Rooney has been discussing his ultra-successful United team, and he claims there’s only one current United player who would get into that famous Champions League winning squad from 2008.

Wayne Rooney says only one Man Utd player would get into Alex Ferguson’s team

Rooney was asked which of the current crop of United players he thinks would make it in his team.

Interestingly, Rooney says there’s only one United player he could see getting into his 2008 side – Bruno Fernandes.

“The only one you could even have argument with is Bruno Fernandes,” Rooney said.

“Would he get in the team? I don’t know he’s a fantastic player.

“He scores goals, he creates goals. But then when you look at our team we had, you know, playing midfield, we had Scholes, Carrick, then in the number 10 position you had myself at times you had myself in there, Tevez sometimes in there. So we had very good players as well.

“I think Bruno is the only one you could have an argument to say he could be in that squad.”

Fernandes is arguably the best player in the Premier League right now, but as Rooney says, there’s an argument to make that he wouldn’t even start for the 2008 Manchester United side.

Back then, United didn’t play with a number 10, and as we saw under Ruben Amorim, Fernandes is wasted deeper.

Carlos Tevez and Rooney himself played sort of a deeper attacking role at times, but then you have to question whether Fernandes would start over either of those two players.

The fact that the Premier League’s best player would arguably not even start for Alex Ferguson’s United side is a sign of how the quality in English football has declined over time, that’s for sure.
