'Watched him close up': Ally McCoist says he's now a huge fan of 21-year-old Arsenal youngster

The World Cup has given a number of young players the perfect platform to showcase their talents.

The likes of Jude Bellingham and Pedri have shown they’re already at the top of their game.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Ally McCoist has been blown away with a young Arsenal star in Qatar.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta still has six players out in Qatar.

William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli have both been on the periphery of the France and Brazil teams.

McCoist has now admitted he’s a huge fan of Bukayo Saka, who is playing a big part in England’s success.

The 21-year-old scored England’s final goal on Sunday as they cruised past Senegal.

After being rested against Wales, McCoist now believes Saka is a certain starter under Gareth Southgate.

It was Saka’s third goal of the tournament, putting him level with the likes of Lionel Messi and Richarlison.

Speaking on TalkSPORT about the Arsenal star, McCoist said: “I’ve watched him close up in this tournament, and boy he’s been excellent, he really, really has.

“Great maturity, he’s blossomed in that squad and blossomed in that team, and now he’s looking like a starter for Gareth.

“Gareth’s probably looking at his team and thinks in a normal game he’s got eight or nine starters. Saka’s just about in there.”

“Saka’s been excellent, and he’s only going to get better.

“This England squad and the boys are probably nowhere near their peak.”

McCoist isn’t the only person who’s a huge fan of Saka right now.

The 21-year-old has had a sensational tournament in Qatar, and received plenty of praise from his England teammates.

Phil Foden highlighted his ability to arrive at the right place at the right time in attacking areas.

Harry Kane simply said he was brilliant against Senegal, and has formed a good relationship with the Arsenal youngster.

Saka’s ability to contribute in defence and attack makes him a fantastic option against France.

He can help Kyle Walker double up on Kylian Mbappe, the tournament’s current top scorer.

If they can overcome Les Bleus, England have a real chance of going all the way in Qatar.
