Liverpool hero Luis Garcia has urged Jurgen Klopp to not rush Harvey Elliott back into the Premier League.
The 18-year-old played a part in each of Liverpool’s first four league games this season. He didn’t get a goal or an assist at that point, but he still managed to catch everyone’s eye.
Just when things were looking great, Elliott, labelled as ‘unbelievable‘ by Blackburn Rovers midfielder Bradley Johnson, suffered a horrific ankle injury in the game against Leeds United back in September. He has had to go through a lot over the last few months, but he’s now back and Jose Enrique wants Klopp to start him against Leicester tonight.
However, Garcia, who spent three years at Liverpool between 2004 and 2007, believes it’s too early for the youngster to come straight back into the Premier League side.
Luis Garcia: Klopp should not rush Harvey Elliott back into Liverpool side
Liverpool take on Leicester City in the Premier League tonight. The Foxes got the better of Klopp’s side at the end of December and Reds fans will be hoping to get their revenge later today.
Skipper Jordan Henderson is a doubt for the game tonight which means there’s a spot up for grabs in the middle of the park. Jose Enrique believes Elliott is the man Klopp should turn to after his fantastic display against Cardiff City in the FA Cup last weekend.
Garcia, however, has strongly disagreed.
“I’d wait to play Elliott from the start. No rush, he needs to gain rhythm of competition, no risks now,” he responded to Enrique’s post on Instagram.
TBR View:
Garcia is absolutely spot on.
Liverpool’s medical team has given Harvey Elliott the green light to play and he has worked extremely hard to recover from what was truly a horrifying injury. His performance against Cardiff was very positive as well, and his confidence would now be at an all-time high.
However, the intensity of the Premier League is much higher than what Liverpool faced against Cardiff. Elliott may be ready, but it’s not wise to start him just four days after he played for the first time in about five months.
Elliott should ideally be on the bench tonight, but if Liverpool’s medical staff are convinced he can handle it, don’t be surprised to see him start.
