Report claims one Liverpool player had talks with Darwin Nunez about Anfield move while actually playing

Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Benfica striker, Darwin Nunez, with the Reds set to pay a club-record fee to bring the Uruguayan to England.

Nunez has emerged as one of the most sought-after players on the continent after a stunning goal scoring season with Benfica last term. He smashed in more than 30 goals across all competitions, alerting some of the very best clubs in Europe to his talents. Of course, two of those goals came against Liverpool.

And according to The Times, it was during those clashes with Liverpool that the groundwork was put in by none other than Virgil van Dijk. The Times reports that while Jurgen Klopp has been key in Nunez joining, star defender Van Dijk actually spoke to Nunez in April while playing against him.

It’s said the Dutchman was seriously impressed with what Nunez offered and held what the Times calls ‘direct conversations’ with the striker about a move to Liverpool.

It seems to have done the trick, too. The Times reports today that a deal is all but done for Nunez to join the Reds.

Van Dijk, it seems, was happy to see the back of Nunez and will be delighted to see him walk through the door.

TBR’s View: If Darwin Nunez Is Good Enough For Van Dijk, He’s Good Enough For Anyone

At the end of the day, if you’re a striker and you are impressing one of – if not the – world’s best striker, then you are doing something right.

Nunez was fabulous in those two games against Liverpool in April. It’s little wonder that Van Dijk was in his hear, and it’s interesting to see such a big publication confirming such talks happened.

Van Dijk himself is already a huge presence in this Liverpool team. The addition of Nunez, then, just further strengthens what is already a brilliant Premier League team.
