Video: Tottenham player messes up in England training but then instantly makes up for it

Every member of the England squad except for James Maddison was in training ahead of their match against the USA.

In a video shared on England’s official YouTube channel, the squad can be seen doing a number of drills.

One of which involves two teams playing a small-sided game, encouraging short, intense phases on play.

It’s a good opportunity for England’s attacking players to stay sharp while the defenders work on defending one-on-one situations.

The drill ended up with Manchester City’s Jack Grealish regularly coming up against Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier.

Both players came off the bench against Iran, with Grealish scoring the final goal.

They’ll know that their performances in training could help them break into Southgate’s starting line-up.

Although, it seems unlikely that he’ll want to change too much from Monday’s winning side.

Dier will therefore be disappointed that he messed up in training up against Grealish.

However, he did make amends for it in the very next phase of play, which pleased England’s coaches.

Dier messed up in England training

The video shows Grealish receiving the ball under pressure from Dier, looking over his left shoulder before accelerating right leaving Dier off-balance.

He then turns again to give himself space and the chance to dribble at Dier head on.

Dier then puts a foot in, which Grealish easily glides past before driving forward.

Grealish then plays three quick passes with Jordan Henderson, once again evading Dier’s press, before the Liverpool midfielder scores.

The pair are then one-on-one again in the next attack, but Dier gets a great block in to deny Grealish.

His block falls to Kyle Walker who scores past Nick Pope at the near post, with an England coach heard applauding Dier’s defending and shouting his name.

Even though Dier messed up in training against Grealish, he seems to be enjoying his time in the England camp.

Harry Maguire’s return to training suggests it’s unlikely he’ll be starting against the USA tomorrow.

If Southgate decides to move to a three at the back system, then he could slot in given his experience in that system under Antonio Conte.

Until then, he’ll be kept sharp by defending against Grealish in training every day.
