Lothar Matthaus has urged Bayern Munich to consider signing Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos at the end of this season.

The Greek international joined the Gunners in January 2018, when Arsene Wenger was still at the helm. A lot was expected of him after he made his debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford, but he was never given an opportunity in the first team by Unai Emery or Mikel Arteta.

Mavropanos is now at Stuttgart on loan and he has been brilliant there. The Bundesliga outfit are expected to sign him on a permanent deal at the end of this season as well, but he may not stay there for very long.

Matthaus feels Mavropanos should be a candidate for Bayern to replace Niklas Sule if he walks away in the summer.

Lothar Matthaus: Bayern Munich should sign Arsenal defender Mavropanos

The German icon wrote in his column on Sky Deutschland: “It is questionable whether the German champions will not have to look for a central defender if Niklas Süle does not accept the current offer. Why hasn’t he accepted it yet?

“I’m assuming that Bayern won’t make any big improvements. If Süle were to leave, a trained defender might be more important than a central midfielder.

“There are some very interesting players in the Bundesliga. I am thinking of Mavropanos from Stuttgart (on loan from Arsenal), Gvardiol from Leipzig or Bella Kotchap from Bochum.

“Everyone plays a really good role in the Bundesliga, would certainly be financially feasible for Bayern and could develop further under Nagelsmann.”

Serge Gnabry 2.0?

Arsenal let Serge Gnabry leave for nothing a few years ago and he had a good spell at Werder Bremen. Bayern Munich snapped him up soon after and he is now one of the most dangerous attackers in the Bundesliga.

If Bayern listen to Matthaus and go for Mavropanos, Arsenal fans may end up having a sense of déjà vu as it is very likely that the Greek defender will succeed at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Mavropanos has been absolutely fantastic for Stuttgart since he joined them. After the Swabians’ win over Wolfsburg last year, German outlet ZVW heaped praise on him for his ‘dream goal, and for defending ‘flawlessly’.

Arsenal could really regret losing Mavropanos in the very near future.
