'You can't say no': Manager suggests £45m player could actually sign for Arsenal or Liverpool in January

Arsenal and Liverpool have been handed a boost in their potential pursuit of Cody Gakpo, with Ruud van Nistelrooy admitting the forward will leave.

The PSV manager has been speaking about the in-demand Gakpo ahead of the January window. The Dutch striker enjoyed a fine World Cup and enhanced his reputation with some well-taken goals.

Of course, eyes from English clubs have been on Gakpo for some time. Arsenal are known admirers while in recent weeks it’s become more apparent that Liverpool might be his final destination.

And speaking about his young striker, PSV boss Van Nistelrooy has admitted that a deal in January is a distinct possibility, albeit one he personally opposes.

“If I have the choice, I prefer the summer, but it can also be now. You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no,” Van Nistelrooy said (via Goal).

Gakpo is expected to fetch a fee of around £45m if PSV do decide to sell. The Dutch club know that they’re powerless to resist such offers, and if Gakpo wants out, then their hands are tied.

TBR’s View: Gakpo deal in January seems doable

This is as good a sign for Liverpool and Arsenal that PSV will do a deal when it comes to Gakpo. If the manager is effectively saying there’s business to be done, then this should encourage interested clubs.

For both Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as others keen, there is a lot of sense in signing Gakpo. He scores goals and plays well as a central forward but his versatility in being able to drift wide also helps his game.

There aren’t too many better on the market than Gakpo right now. So with Van Nistelrooy’s comments here, Liverpool and Arsenal have every chance to complete what would be a brilliant January signing.
