‘Unbelievable’ Tottenham player could get one final opportunity to impress Ange Postecoglou vs QPR

Tottenham Hotspur are set to take on Queens Park Rangers in their third pre-season friendly.

Spurs have had a great start to their pre-season. They beat Cambridge United 7-2 in their first game before picking up a 5-1 win against Hearts in their last friendly.

Ange Postecoglou already has a lot of positives to take, and he will surely be looking for more when his side face QPR on Saturday afternoon.

One player could get a final opportunity to change his fortunes before Tottenham fly out of London for their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea.

QPR vs Tottenham could be a make or break game for Djed Spence

Tottenham signed Djed Spence back in the summer of 2022, when Antonio Conte was still at the helm.

Spurs beat a number of clubs to sign the ‘unbelievable‘ defender, and many in the game felt they had secured the services of one of the top prospects in the country.

However, Spence has played just 43 minutes of senior football for Tottenham over the years, which is such a shame as he came in with so much promise.

Everyone expected the 23-year-old to be sold this summer, but Spence’s move to Genoa collapsed and he returned to Tottenham pre-season training.

Postecoglou gave him an opportunity against Hearts, and the Englishman scored a goal and picked up an assist in what was a fantastic display.

TBR Football gave Spence a 10/10 rating for his performance – he was that good!

Many people felt Spence may have saved his Tottenham career with that display, but Postecoglou’s post-game comments were not exactly a ringing endorsement of the defender sticking around.

Postecoglou said about Spence: “Djed did well. He has had a tough couple of years. He is training with us and I think with all of the players they are here with us at the moment and when they are here with us I treat them as Tottenham players unless something suddenly changes.”

The game against QPR on Saturday afternoon is Tottenham’s last pre-season friendly before they head out for their tour of Japan and South Korea.

Spence is expected to get some minutes again, and this will be his final opportunity to impress Postecoglou and convince the Spurs boss to take him on their pre-season tour, where they will play three games.

If he doesn’t have a good game, this could be the end of the road for Spence at Tottenham.

What should Tottenham do with Spence?

Tottenham have found themselves in an interesting situation with Spence.

It was almost a foregone conclusion that the 23-year-old would be leaving the club this summer, but his performance against Hearts may have just given him a lifeline.

Tottenham will need to be on the market if Emerson Royal, who has claimed he’s unhappy with his game time, leaves the club in the coming weeks.

Spurs will then have to find a replacement, but if Spence can produce a solid display today and get on the plane to South Korea and Japan, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be given a chance in the 2024/25 season.

We think Tottenham should keep Spence at the club beyond the end of the summer transfer window and give him a season to prove himself behind Pedro Porro.
