'Unbelievable': Chairman suggests Newcastle's Dan Ashworth was raving about his 19-year-old player during transfer call

Newcastle United made plenty of clever moves in the transfer market this summer.

One person they brought in that won’t be seen on the pitch is Sporting Director Dan Ashworth.

Speaking on The Hard Truth podcast, Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed a conversation he had with Ashworth.

The former Brighton technical director is one of the best recruiters in the country.

The Seagulls are currently sitting in fourth in the Premier League, with a squad made up of mainly Ashworth recruits.

Ashworth was raving about one Peterborough United defender in a call with MacAnthony.

The Newcastle director called the player a ‘Rolls Royce’, you sit up and take notice.

The Peterborough chairman said: “Dan Ashworth said to Barry, ‘You’re talking about the Rolls Royce?’,”

“Dan said, ‘Yeah, we know all about your boy, from the reports from Brighton I got. Unbelievable.

“He’s a Rolls Royce of a centre-half, but we (Newcastle) are looking at the attacking end of the pitch at the moment.

“But he said, ‘Barry, absolute Rolls Royce, every scout report that went into Brighton was unbelievable”.

Ashworth was raving about defender

MacAnthony avoided saying the name of the defender in question during his podcast.

However, it’s almost certainly 19-year-old Ronnie Edwards, who has already made 50 appearances for Peterborough.

The defender was part of the England squad that played the under-19s European Championship.

Edwards played all 120 minutes in the final, and negotiated nearly 80 minutes of the match with a booking.

Manchester City and Tottenham were both reportedly interested in signing Edwards this summer.

He’s previously been compared to Ben White, who time on loan at Peterborough.

Ashworth raving about the Peterborough defender is unsurprising.

Newcastle have started identifying other young stars, such as Cole McKinnon and Garang Kuol.

Ashworth now appears to be approaching Newcastle’s recruitment in a similar way to Brighton’s.
